The moment
Fire engineering is at a global inflection point. Regulation is tightening. Sustainability demands are intensifying. Housing pressure is mounting. Technology is accelerating.
These forces are colliding, and the traditional foundations of fire safety practice are proving inadequate for what comes next.
The break
Critical fire safety decisions are often made using proprietary software or in-house spreadsheets that cannot be independently checked. When methods are hidden or undocumented, engineers have no reliable way to verify accuracy or improve the calculations that underpin life-safety outcomes.
Fire engineering knowledge remains fragmented across textbooks, research papers, standards and informal practice. The industry struggles to consistently demonstrate the competence of its members or the reliability of the methods being applied, making it difficult to show that performance-based decisions are technically sound.
Regulators frequently do not have clear access to the underlying methodologies used in design submissions and must spend significant effort reconstructing or interpreting the logic behind them. This lack of transparency slows reviews, increases uncertainty and ultimately limits the pace of safe innovation across the built environment.
The rebuild
Emberon Tech is rebuilding the foundations of fire engineering through three interconnected pillars that address the core challenges of transparency, collaboration, and competence in fire safety practice.
Verified open methods
Every calculation method is traceable to authoritative sources, peer-reviewable, and continuously validated by the global community.
Transparent tooling
Professional workflows built on open foundations, where every result can be understood, verified, and improved upon.
Competence-led workflows
Technology that amplifies human expertise rather than replacing the critical thinking that ensures safety.
The platform
Emberon Tech develops and supports a complete ecosystem of fire engineering tools, each serving a specific role in the transition to transparent practice.
OpenFire
The free, open-source foundation. A comprehensive library of verified fire engineering calculation methods, completely transparent and community-driven. Released under the MIT license.

Learn about consulting →The people
Simón and Jamie are fire engineers who became convinced that their profession needed better foundations. They started Emberon Tech in Edinburgh to build those foundations.
Simón
Co-Founder
Fire engineer focused on performance-based design, transparency and making complex engineering methods usable in real projects.
Jamie
Co-Founder
Fire engineer and software developer dedicated to building open, verifiable and professional-grade tools engineers can trust.
Neither Simón nor Jamie believe that technology should replace engineering judgement. They believe it should make that judgement more transparent, more verifiable, and more collaborative.
